Flynn’s Rescue
When I rescued my newest puppy, Flynn (a Rat-a-Pap), he hadn’t been understood by his previous owner. Flynn had been taken in by an acquaintance of a friend, and he ended up in a frustrating environment with less than kind experiences. So, when I witnessed the way this owner was so reckless and uncaring about Flynn while walking around at a local pet event, I knew I had to step in.
Before you jump to any conclusions, I was not overstepping my boundaries by approaching the owner. He had made a public announcement to my friend that this dog was going to the pound that day if she didn’t take him back. The invitation was there, and I gladly took him up on his offer. I thought, “I’ll worry about explaining this new puppy to my hubby later” (a shout out to my fellow bleeding hearts out there).
In that moment, most importantly, Flynn needed someone who cared and could find a loving home for him. Luckily, my dog, Mercedes, is the type who accepts all animals. I knew the transition into my home would be easy for this spunky little pup.
After Puppy Days at the mall wrapped up, I packed up my booth and walked Flynn to the car. With every step, I could see his anxiety grow. My friend was with me and had told me that he cries, shakes and throws up on car rides. He was drooling and shaking and terrified.
I immediately thought of how I could give sweet Flynn the beginning of many good experiences so he would feel secure when his new family came to pick him up. Luckily, the booth I had at Puppy Days was for essential oils and, YES, there are oils to help with pet anxiety!
So, I pulled out lavender for anxiety and digestzen for his upset stomach. They’re easy to apply and safe for dogs. I put a few drops of lavender on the back of Flynn’s neck and on his paddy paws. Within minutes, he began to relax enough so I could put him in the car. To prevent the nausea he got from being over-stimulated and scared, I swiped his belly with digestzen and put a little on my finger to rub on the inside of his cheek.
He was still a little nervous, but we arrived home without shaking, drooling or vomiting! Yay! Big “Jazz-Paws” and a circle for Flynn!
And guess what? I found a loving and caring home for Flynn that night! YES! My bonus daughter, Madelin, and her Army hubby immediately fell in love with Flynn’s cute nose and playful eyes.
In preparation of sending Flynn to his forever home, I dedicated time to giving Flynn fun car rides around Las Vegas. I didn’t take Flynn everywhere, but he did enjoy greeting his new friends all over town, from the UPS store to Sunset Eastern Animal Hospital. I alternated essential oils one day and CBDdoggies the next so that Flynn didn’t become immune to using just one type of treatment.
I’m a true believer that a good balance of patient, consistent training, dōTERRA oils, CBDdoggies, NumNums and/or Tincture can help you and your pet live a carefree life. And if you have any questions about the products or the implementation, feel free to send me a note at amy@healinghhp.com
